Social Networking Becoming More Than a Teenage Fad?

By: Lee Ardina

“Adults” have began to discover the value of social networks such as Facebook, most noteably TV channels. Channels such as CNN news have their own Facebook in order to provide stories about the latest developments in politics. CNN also uses Facebook as a way to have people comment on its stories. At the current time, CNN has about 450 thousand fans, quite a large number. Other news networks have similarly followed CNN’s example: Fox news, NBC action news, and ABC news. TV companies have also found Facebook as an excellent means of promoting their shows. Most NBC shows have their own Facebook. And unlike TV advertisements, this type of advertisement is free due to the nature of Facebook. Facebook has also allowed TV companies to create a place where people can discuss their opinions of a show and provide feedback, all at no expense of the TV companies. It’s no wonder TV companies have so readily embraced the social networking movement.

Like TV companies, rock bands have created Myspaces in order to increase their fan base and exposure. Similarly, politicians have resorted to Twitter in order to increase the number of people who hear their message. They also use Twitter to generate support for their campaigns.

Social networking has even infiltrated the field of employment and college searches. Many colleges use social networks to look up prospective applicants. They do this because social networks often provide a much more comprehensive view of an applicant than the tailored and perfected college application. Likewise, employers often look onto social networks such as Myspace and Facebook to monitor the status of their employees. Oftentimes, employees will utilize Facebook and such to complain about their bosses. The bosses can just as easily view these comments and see their employees opinions. Social networking has indeed become a powerful way to monitor both friends and enemies alike.

A study done by CNN has shown that one and a half million females using Facebook are actually over the age of fifty-five. This just goes to show how Facebook is no longer a teenage thing. Everyone and their mother has a Facebook now a days. Maybe it’s because Facebook provides such an easy method for people to keep in touch or just show off how many friends they have. In a way, Facebook satisfies the need many people have to feel important where they might not get that need filled in real life. Whatever the reason, more and more people, not just teens, are subscribing to the fad now known as social networking.
